Mona Jo Yount, 76, died at 5:33 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, at St. Luke’s Great American Heart Institute, Kansas City, Missouri. She was born on June 23, 1940, in Manhattan, to young parents Laura (Huffman) Townsend and Irl Townsend. Later she married Walter W. Yount but was divorced in 1987.
While a homemaker for most her life, she also worked a variety of jobs, including secretary of the United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Kansas, the Unity Church of Overland Park, and Environmental Protection Agency in Kansas City, Kansas. She completed her Associates of Arts in 1989 from Johnson County Community College and her bachelor’s degree in 1992 from Ottawa University.
Mona is survived by her sisters Polly Raffety (Wichita) and Rosa lie Palmer (St. Charles, Missouri); her children, Gregory Yount and wife Jane (Bakersfield, Missouri), Douglas Yount and wife Tina (Bettendorf, Iowa), Julie Yount (Kansas City); six grandchildren, Nicholas Yount (Bettendorf, Iowa), Lisa Sewell and husband Damon (Bakersfield, Missouri), Matthew Yount (Columbia, Missouri), Robert Yount (Bettendorf, Iowa), Joshua Yount (Bakersfield, Missouri) and Andrea Yount (Bakersfield, Missouri). She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Yount was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters (Zola Pearson, Bess Tracy, and Margaret Harvey).
Cremation was performed by Cremation Center of Kansas City. Her ashes will be laid to rest in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 23 at the Antioch Christian Church (3741 W 15th St. N, Wichita). Memorial flowers may be sent to the church for the service. No money is requested.
